Pocket AIS Wants to Put a Whole Retro Arcade in Your Pocket

For those familiar with us, you know that we are big into retro gaming. And lucky for us there are a wide variety of options around these days to access all that classic content. In an age where AAA gaming often lacks substance, needs a day one patch or worse is removed from your digital library, you can always count on that old retro game of the past to re-ignite your gaming passion. Whether you want to relive the classics you grew up with, or access the games you never got around to playing there is a large community full of games out there just waiting for you.

The upcoming Pocket AIS from AISLPC is made to help you access that content faster, more convenient and make reliving those classic times easier then ever.

With a scheduled launch date of October 21, 2026, the Pocket AIS is a compact retro-focused handheld designed to bring a surprisingly broad range of gaming platforms within reach.  The system will sport a 4:3 display, comes with dual analog controls, and offers the popular Hall-effect triggers. It features a custom operating system to get you started, is blessed with expandable storage and offers modern Wi-Fi 6 connectivity.  There is a lot that this little handheld is trying to do in one system. Lets dive into its specs a little more below.

Small Handheld, Big Retro Ambitions

At the core of the Pocket AIS is the Rockchip RK3562 processor which runs a Quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 running up to 2.0 GHz .  Paired with 2GB of RAM.

The device outputs all content to a 4.5-inch IPS display running at 1024 × 768, with a traditional 4:3 aspect ratio.  Though not favored for modern gaming, for retro classic games it makes a lot of sense to keep the 4:3 screen size as many of the  classics that defined the NES, Mega Drive (Genesis) and more  were designed around the classic 4:3 screen size.

According to AISLPC, the system will be able to support a wide selection of retro platforms, including PSP, Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, NES, Neo Geo, MAME, CPS1, CPS2, CPS3, Mega Drive and NAOMI, among others. The company stated that the Pocket AIS can even run some PS2 games, depending on the game compatibility and performance requirements. That is a pretty ambitious list.

Ais OS Brings a Custom Experience

The Pocket AIS comes with its own custom operating system,  Ais OS. This is an operating system based on the Rocknix linux distro, with a completely new custom build user interface specifically for the pocket AIS. With as the aim to provide a straightforward, intuitive, ready-to-use experience without requiring players to spend their first afternoon figuring out how everything works. Just turn on your device and start playing by yourself or hop online for some multiplayer fun.

For game downloads, users can first download the required game application through the Applications section and then download compatible games through that application, but if you are a hobbyist that prefers to get their hand dirty and getting deeper into their thick of customization, a community version of Rocknix is available, giving you additional flexibility for customization and exploration.  You can tinker to your hearts content as the OS includes a applications section where users can access an application store and download even more supported applications developed by third-party developers. This even includes Applications such as Youtube and TikTok. ( wifi connection to the internet required)

Modern features to go beyond 8-Bit Classics

While the display has one foot firmly planted in the retro world, the controls suggest that Pocket AIS wants to offer more then simple arcade and 8-bit experiences.  The system comes with dual 3D analog joysticks along with Hall-effect linear triggers offering better control and targeting for platforms such as Dreamcast, PSP and Nintendo 64 that feature games that rely on more than just the traditional Dpad. Completing the package is rumble via a built in motor and fancy RGB lighting, giving the Pocket AIS a little more modern flair.

The handheld features an independently designed, molded speaker system with dedicated acoustic chambers to bring some serious acoustics. According to AISLPC, this design allows the company to further optimize sound quality and provide an enhanced audio experience compared with previous models. This is all made possible by their independently designed speaker system with dedicated acoustic chambers helps further improve sound quality and provide an enhanced audio experience

Sound is such an important part of any  game, that it would be good to see a system that can support a solid sound experience, that can transport you back decades in just a few seconds. And if you do not want to disturb your family or people out in public the device of course comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Built for Longer Gaming Sessions and cooling without the fuss

All that gaming can run any gaming system hot, and heat is any electronic device's enemy. Pocket AIS takes a more automated approach to keeping itself cool and keep you gaming longer.  The handheld features an automatic 5-level fan speed control system,  monitors its internal temperature and automatically adjusts fan speed according to the current workload.

What that means is that normal gaming should remain quieter, while more demanding sessions can trigger additional cooling when it is needed. If the system temperature rises above 70°C, the fan automatically switches to full speed to help manage heat at maximum capacity.

It is a sensible approach for a compact handheld. Nobody wants to worry about overheating of their device when in the middle of having fun. Just sit back and let Pocket AIS handle the cooling automatically in the background while adapting to different workloads.

Room and features to spare

If you have a lot of games to add, then you are not to worry about that 4GB internal storage space.  The system comes with an MicroSD card slot allowing you to expand storage up to 512GB.

The Pocket AIS also includes a mighty 4000mAh battery, giving the handheld the capacity to support longer gaming sessions, especially when things run hot and the fan doing all that work.

The included wifi card offers 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi 6, providing wireless connectivity for supported game streaming and various online multiplayer features, updates and more.

Despite all these features AISLPC has announced an official retail price of $169.99 USD, for either their Black or Green version.

At that price, Pocket AIS seems to sit itself solidly in the current retro handheld market, all while offering players something capable of handling more than just the earliest generations of console gaming while still remaining compact enough to throw into a bag.

Whether it ultimately hits that sweet spot will, of course, come down to how the hardware performs in the real world. The information and specs are delivered by AISLPC, we did not yet do any in depending testing. We will be particularly interested in exploring all the features and how they work together, once we can spend some proper hands-on time with the device.

A Retro Handheld to Watch?

The Pocket AIS certainly has an interesting specification sheet, while it enters a fairly crowded market.

With a 4.5-inch 4:3 IPS display, dual analog sticks, Hall-effect triggers, AisOS, expandable storage, and Wi-Fi 6. All in a package that is easy to throw in a bag and take with you, it should be the traveling gamer's best friend.

We will be keeping an eye on Pocket AIS as its October 21 launch approaches. For anyone interested in learning more about the system, check out the link below.
