REPLACED is a game that pulls you in with its atmosphere and storytelling, then asks you to slow down and experience its world and all its detail. That approach works beautifully at times but it can also clash with expectations for a more fast-paced action platformer. What you get instead is something more deliberate, more methodical.
What Is It?
REPLACED is a narrative-driven 16bit style - 2.5D action platformer set in an alternate 1980s America that has been reshaped by nuclear catastrophe. You step into the role of R.E.A.C.H., an artificial intelligence trapped inside a human body, navigating the decaying streets of Phoenix City while uncovering a deeper conspiracy tied to the powerful Phoenix Corporation. The feel of the game brought me back to some of those classic games back in the day such as Another World and Flashback , and even Abe's Oddessy.
At its core this is a story-first experience. While there is plenty combat, platforming and exploration the game feeds it all back into its central narrative and the questions what it really means to be human. The world is bleak in the most stylish way and filled with morally complex characters that help bring the setting to life.
Gameplay
Let me be straight up from the start, going into REPLACED, I expected something a bit more action-heavy. What I got instead was a slower-paced experience that leans heavily into exploration, platforming, and storytelling, with bursts of combat breaking up the exploration.
The games' combat system is clearly inspired by the rhythm-based flow of the Batman Arkham games translated into a 2D space. You dodge, counter, and chain together melee attacks while watching for visual cues that tell you how to react. Build up enough momentum and you can unleash powerful gun attacks that work ranged and up close. Overall combat works well and feels satisfying in short bursts, especially when animations kick in for those impactful takedowns.
The downside is that combat does not evolve much beyond the basic fighting concepts. There is limited variety in abilities and weapons and most encounters play out in a similar pattern. It never becomes bad but it also never quite reaches the depth you might hope for.
Platforming is where things get a bit more uneven. On paper it is solid. You climb, swing, jump, and solve environmental puzzles. In practice there were some small annoyances. For instance the stunning visuals can sometimes make it hard to read what is interactable or where to go next even when following the "yellow paint" indicators. I also ran into moments where inputs did not quite register as expected, leading to missed grabs and as a consequence repeated tries for some trivial areas. These small frustrations can add up, especially during longer sequences.
There are also stealth and puzzle elements mixed in, which help break up the pacing but again reinforce that this is not a fast-moving action game. It is a slower, more deliberate experience where you look for what to do next, where to travel to and how to progress.
Presentation
Presentation is where REPLACED comes our strong out of the gate.
The world-building is fantastic. Characters, enemy designs, and environmental storytelling all work together to create a believable dystopian society. Even the in-game menu stands out, presented as a retro Walkman-style device that feels both nostalgic and functional. The game does rely a lot on telling the story with text, so if you are not a reader in games and skip through them you miss a lot of the games gravitas. This is where those games such as Another world etc. were better in telling a story with the visual. Since REPLACED is such a strong game visually , I would have loved more story told through its presentation as opposed to the text on screen in form of dialog or discovered logfiles.
The visual presentation is nothing short of stunning and does a lot of the heavy lifting in what makes this game noticeable. The 16-bit inspired pixel art combined with modern lighting effects creates a world that feels alive in every frame. Large character sprites move across richly detailed environments filled with subtle animations and atmospheric touches. From neon-lit streets to crumbling industrial zones, every location feels handcrafted.
The lighting deserves special mention. It gives the entire game that retro sci-fi, Blade Runner-inspired feel that perfectly sells its cyberpunk identity. It is one of those games where you will occasionally stop moving just to take it all in.
Sound design is equally strong. Environmental audio pulls you deeper into the world, and while the music is excellent it can feel a bit sparse at times. When it hits though it hits well. Leaning into a moody synth-driven soundtrack that complements the setting perfectly.
Parental Advice
REPLACED has an ESRB Mature rating which that feels mostly appropriate based on theme and violence, though you could argue it fine for teens. The game features violence, dark themes, and a heavy narrative centered around control, identity, and survival in a dystopian world.
There is no heavy reliance on voice acting, with much of the story delivered through text. Younger players who are not interested in reading may miss key parts of the narrative. For teens and older players, especially those who enjoy story-driven experiences, this will be a much better fit.
Final Thoughts
REPLACED is a bit of a balancing act. On one hand it delivers one of the most visually striking and atmospheric worlds I have seen in quite some time and I really, really loved every visual moment. The storytelling is engaging, if you read all the text, and the setting is very memorable with all the right tropes in all the right doses. It is an overall experience that sticks with you.
On the other hand the gameplay does not always keep up with that same level of excellence. Combat can become repetitive, even as it spaced out around the game and platforming can be inconsistent enough to cause some frustrations.
Do not get me wrong however, This is still a game I genuinely enjoyed. The nostalgic feel to games such as Flashback and Another World were strong but it carves out its own world and narrative for a whole new experience and not feel derivative . At its price point and with availability on Game Pass, it is absolutely worth experiencing especially if you are drawn to cyberpunk worlds and story-driven games. If you are looking for fast moving action and tight pixel perfect platforming you might want to skip this dystopia.
REPLACED delivers an solid unforgettable atmosphere and strong narrative, even if its slower pace and rough gameplay edges hold it back from absolute greatness.
