Toy Story 3: Complete Edition Review | To Infinity, and Back to the Toy Box!

There are few things quite as magical as getting to play with your toys and let your imagination run wild. Whole universes are created in a child's mind with their favorite toys going on many adventures. And for some of us this even happens still, when you're supposed to be a grown-up. The Toy Story Franchise captured the spirit of the world of toys and imagination so beautiful since its first movie hit the silver screen back in 1995. Thankfully, nobody told Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie that they had to grow up in all this time allowing the franchise to bring much joy to new generations and the first generation alike.

With the arrival of Toy Story 3: Complete Edition, a much-loved adventure is getting another chance to shine on modern gaming platforms. Originally released back in 2010, this Pixar-inspired adventure is returning with upgraded visuals, improved performance, and a few extra goodies stuffed into the toy chest. It is time to dust off those old cowboy boots, check Buzz's batteries, and see whether this adventure still has what it takes to keep the whole family entertained.

What Is It?

Toy Story 3: Complete Edition brings back the video game inspired by Pixar's third feature-length Toy Story movie. This time the Pixar/Disney Interactive classic is published under Atari's label and featuring the work of Digital Eclipse. This edition brings the original game to modern platforms with improved visuals, support for higher resolutions and smoother performance, alongside content that was previously exclusive to particular versions. The end result is a more complete package for newcomers as well as longtime fans alike.

Just like the original release, the  game is built around two main experiences: Story Mode and Toy Box Mode. Story Mode takes us through a selection of memorable moments inspired by the film, while Toy Box Mode gives players a playground in which to make their own fun.

Gameplay

Story Mode delivers a colourful platforming adventure packed with familiar characters, action sequences, collectibles, and puzzles. The levels take inspiration from the movie while adding gameplay challenges that let you experience these scenes from a different perspective. Throughout the game you switch between Woody, Buzz, and Jessie to keep things fresh, sometimes even within the same level, other times you play dedicated stories for each charachter. Their different abilities help keep the gameplay fresh and fun. One moment you are platforming across Andy's bedroom and the next you are fighting Emperor Zurg  in space.

The story campaign is relatively short but at times can be challenging, the game does monitor your progress and eventually throws you a bone and adds some assistance to help you complete a challenge.

Each level is filled with collectibles and hidden items to discover, giving curious players reasons to revisit levels and explore those corners they missed on their first run. The variety of activities helps keep things moving, although players looking for deep combat systems or particularly challenging platforming might find the adventure a little on the simple side.

Toy Story 3 knows its audience, and its family friendly accessible approach makes it easier for younger players to get involved without leaving parents behind.

Toy Box Mode  brings a host of more content to the collection and was the inspiration behind Disney Infinity .  It is as is you take that enormous box of toys you had as a kid and dumped it all onto the living room floor.  Rather than following a fixed sequence of story missions, you step into a Wild West town inspired by Woody's Roundup and get to decide how you want to spend your time ( Though there is a small tutorial involved to get you going)

You can help towns folk, build up the area, run missions, or  just ride around, explore, collect items, and generally cause harmless toy-sized chaos. This town is your personal playground.  Complete quests to earn gold, then use your rewards to purchase buildings, unlock new content, decorate your surroundings, and customise the townsfolk. New additions to the town can unlock further activities, giving you plenty of reasons to keep exploring and building.

Toy Box Mode is build for you to experiment, laugh at the silly situations you find yourself in, and enjoy the freedom to do things your own way. The building and customisation systems also provide a welcome creative element.

And to top it all of , the game comes with local two-player co-op, available in both Story Mode and Toy Box Mode. Playing together is just more fun and it is great to see it included in the game.

Presentation

Toy Story 3: Complete Edition looks good and it is a testament to both the well designed original and the great work Digital Eclipse delivers. The improved visuals provided the characters and environments a fresh coat of paint, helping the adventure feel really pop on modern displays. In fact I found that the few pre-rendered cutscenes now looked worse then the actual gameplay.

With character animations and environments that captured much of the charm of Pixar's world,  the Complete Edition brings higher resolutions and improved performance to help the game look sharper and run more smoothly on compatible hardware. Where the game can reach up to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second.

Actual performance depends on the system you're playing on, but the improvements help give this older adventure a more modern feel. We played on the Switch2 and both on the handheld as well as docked mode sported great colors and framerate.

Making the Complete Edition, actually complete, is the content. Eclipse brings together material that was previously restricted to specific platform versions only, including the opportunity to play as Evil Emperor Zurg in Toy Box Mode.

Additionally the package also includes four additional Theme Packs for decorating buildings and customising your Toy Box.

Parental Advice

Toy Story 3: Complete Edition is an appealing option for families looking for an accessible action-platforming adventure. Its colourful,  family friendly  presentation, low violence familiar characters, straightforward objectives, and local co-op make it an easy game to consider for a shared gaming session.  As always, check the age rating for your region and consider your child's individual comfort with cartoon action and platforming challenges.

Final Thoughts

Toy Story 3: Complete Edition is a reminder that a good game doesn't always need to be brand new to be worth playing. Sometimes a little polish, a few extra toys, and a chance to revisit a beloved adventure are all it takes to bring back the fun.

The Story Mode in the game, offers a fun, accessible journey through memorable moments inspired by the film. It is enjoyable, and well executed, if relatively short. The different abilities of Woody, Buzz, and Jessie help keep the platforming varied, but the real highlight remains Toy Box Mode, with its open-ended Wild West playground, quirky missions, town customisation, that gives you the freedom to play how you want.

The graphics and sounds pop and really come to life on modern systems, while the previously platform-restricted content and additional Theme Packs make this a more complete package. Local co-op is the icing on the cake, especially for families and friends who enjoy sharing their adventures on the same sofa.

For those who grew up with Woody and Buzz, it's a lovely opportunity to revisit an old favourite. For  those of a new generation, or who simply missed the original release it's a chance to discover why Toy Box Mode became such a memorable part of the original game. Especially due to the fact is is so well priced at $24.99 for the digital version. You can get a physical copy as well , but is bundled with the other new Atari release : "Toy Story: Retro Roundup!" and therefore cost a little more. Check out our review of that game as well.

To infinity, and beyond!
